Preparing for Farm Life

One of the hardest parts about putting a dream on hold is feeling like everything has stopped. For a little while, that's exactly how I felt.

When we decided to take our home off the market, it felt like our dream of owning land and building a homestead had been placed on the shelf. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized something important:

Just because we're not living the farm dream yet doesn't mean we can't prepare for it.

If anything, this season has given us the opportunity to learn without the pressure of having to know everything right away.

Instead of rushing into farm life, we're taking our time to soak up as much knowledge as we can. We've been visiting local farms, talking with farmers, and asking lots of questions, learning about everything from crop growing to livestock care. Every visit reminds us that there's so much wisdom to be gained from people who have been doing this for years.

One of our favorite experiences has been volunteering with a local pig farmer. Getting our hands dirty, helping with the daily chores, and seeing firsthand what it takes to care for animals has been incredibly rewarding. It's one thing to watch videos or read books, but it's another thing entirely to experience it yourself.

These opportunities have reminded us that homesteading isn't just about owning land. It's about learning the skills, developing patience, and building the confidence to steward that land well when the time comes.I'm grateful that we don't have to wait until we own acreage to begin preparing for it.

There are books to read, gardens to grow, farms to visit, people to learn from, and experiences to gain. Every lesson we learn today is one we'll carry with us into the future.

Maybe this season isn't a delay. Maybe it's training.

God has a way of using the waiting to prepare us for what's ahead, and I can't help but wonder if that's exactly what He's doing here. By the time He opens the door to our own little farm someday, we'll step onto that land with far more knowledge and confidence than we would have had if we'd rushed into it today.

The dream is still alive. We're simply using this season to prepare for it.

And when the day finally comes that we're walking our own fields, planting our own gardens, and caring for our own animals, I have a feeling we'll look back on this season with gratitude.

Because sometimes the waiting isn't keeping us from the dream. Sometimes it's quietly preparing us for it.
