The Faith to Stay

Over the past few months, I've been reflecting on what faith really looks like.

For nearly two years, our family believed God was leading us toward a different kind of life. We dreamed of wide-open spaces, a slower pace, and building a homestead where our children could grow up connected to the land and to one another. We prayed, planned, prepared, and eventually listed our home, believing God would guide each step.

When our house didn't sell and we made the decision to stay, I found myself asking whether we had somehow missed His direction. Had we heard Him wrong? Had we misunderstood what He was asking of us?

The more I prayed, the more I realized something that changed my perspective.

The greatest act of faith was never the move itself. It was our willingness to follow wherever God led—even if that meant staying exactly where we were.

Somewhere along the way, I had quietly attached my faith to the outcome. I thought trusting God meant moving. Instead, He reminded me that trusting Him means following, whether He says "go" or "stay."

It's easy to celebrate faith when it leads to an exciting new beginning. New places and fresh opportunities naturally feel like evidence that God is at work. But faith is just as real when obedience looks ordinary—when the answer is "wait," "not yet," or "stay."

Looking back, I no longer see ninety days of waiting as wasted time. I see a season of God gently teaching me to release my timeline and trust His instead. He wasn't asking me to make the dream happen. He was asking me to place it back in His hands.

I've realized that surrender isn't about giving up on the dream. It's about letting go of the belief that I know the best way—or the best time—for it to come true.

We still hope to have land someday. We still dream of gardens, children running through open fields, and a home where generations gather around the table. Those desires haven't changed.

What has changed is my understanding of faith.

Faith isn't measured by whether we arrive at the destination we imagined. It's measured by our willingness to trust God no matter where the path leads.

Today, that path still leads through Virginia.

Maybe one day God will open the door to the homestead we've prayed for. Maybe He has blessings waiting for us here that we would have missed if we'd rushed ahead. I don't know what the next chapter holds, but I do know this: God's plans have never depended on my timeline.

My prayer has become much simpler than it was a few months ago.

"Lord, make me more committed to following You than to fulfilling my own plans. Give me the courage to go when You say go, the patience to stay when You say stay, and the wisdom to trust You in both."

Because faith was never really about moving.

It has always been about following.
